Mitochondria

Mitochondria are structures inside most eukaryotic cells that turn energy from food into ATP, a molecule cells can use. Their inner membrane is folded into cristae, giving the reactions of cellular respiration more surface area. Mitochondria also carry a small amount of their own DNA, evidence of their origin as once-free-living bacteria.
